Jim Park, Chairman of the Board of Besser Company, presents the 2010 Besser Awards to students Marshall Westfall and Jillian Seguin.
The Anna & Jesse Besser Awards are the highest recognition of academic achievement given at Alpena Community College, and this is the 38th year they have been presented. The Besser Awards are awarded to two students, usually one male and one female, who have made outstanding contributions to the life of the College through scholarship, leadership, and expression of responsibility in solving social problems.
While attending Alpena Community College, Seguin contributed to the life of the College through her involvement as president of Student Senate; as a member of Phi Theta Kappa, including being named to the 2010 All Michigan Academic Team; as a student
representative on the Tobacco Use Task Force; as a contributing
writer for the Lumberjack student newspaper; and volunteering at ACC
events such as the Scramble for Scholarships and Career Pathways
night. The expression of her assumed responsibility in the solution
of social problems is evident in her participation in Michigan State
University’s Young Women’s Student Leadership Conference; speaking
about her experiences to Hope House residents; writing as a
volunteer editorial columnist for The Alpena News; and exhibiting
digital artwork at Art in the Loft. While attending Alpena Community College, Westfall contributed to the life of the College as a member of Phi Theta Kappa; as a member and co-secretary of the Sigma Zeta national honor society; as secretary of the Alpena College Young Republican Party; and as event mediator and volunteer with Science Olympiad. The expression of his assumed responsibility in the solution of social problems is evident in his volunteer efforts with the Alpena Free Clinic providing medical assistance to the less fortunate; and as a note taker for accommodation students through The Student Services Center.
The Besser Foundation includes a $500 stipend along with a framed certificate. These students also have their names engraved on the Besser Award plaque located inside Alpena Community College’s Newport Center Building.
